Several floor tile shards were discovered when the stone steps in the portico were replaced in 2006. We have pictured them here as part of the documentation of our work in Holden park. |
|
The floor tile shards pictured below are believed to be some of the original floor tiles from the entrance hall of Oakworth House |
|
|
The general dimensions of these tiles are either 6 inches (150mm x 150mm) square or 3 inches by 6 inches (75mm x 150mm), and they are 3/4 inch (18mm) in thickness. They are what
is known as Encaustic floor tiles and were manufactured by a firm called Maw
and Co, originally situated at Ironbridge. They were established
in 1850 and became the largest manufacturer of tiles in the world,
producing more than 20,000.000 tiles per year. After the second World War
the industry went into decline and the firm merged with Campbell Tiles in
1960. This firm was absorbed into H.R. Johnson Tiles in 1968. In 2001
Brian and Lesley Joyce bought Maw and Co from H.R. Johnson and trade under
the original company name. |
