The Oakworth War Memorial

We hold a service of Remembrance each year in November to honour the men on our Oakworth War Memorial who gave their lives in the defence of our freedom in the two World Wars.
This year it will be held on Sunday 11th November 2007 starting at 10.45 am.
All who wish to attend will be most welcome.
Poppy wreaths will be laid, and a one minute silence will be observed for everyone present to take time to think about what these men sacrificed so that we might live in peace
These ceremonies are non political and are just about remembering these men and the futility of war.

If we do not remember the mistakes of the past we are doomed to repeat them in the future.

The War Memorial in Holden Park.
The large structure is the WW1 memorial, and the garden behind it is the WW2 memorial garden.
There is an inscription around the base of the WW1 memorial which reads:
"May we so order our lives after the ideals for which our brethren died that humbly and unashamed we may meet their gallant souls once more."

Fred Binns He is not actually named on our war memorial, as he died whilst wounded and at home on leave, but still on active service in the Army.
We wish to remember him here
Of course there were also men from Oakworth who served in the wars, who survived and came home.
Those known about are listed here, taken from Sunday School lists drawn up at Bogthorn Methodist Chapel.
The original lists are on the wall in the stairway of Holden Hall, Oakworth

We are still researching the men on the war memorial, and would appreciate any information you could supply
