Joseph is a younger brother of Herbert Heaton. Joseph served in the Army during the first world war and was wounded. This was reported in the Keighley News dated 1st December 1917.
He also served during the Second World war as a Local Defence Volunteer (Home Guard)

He is buried in a family grave in Oakworth cemetery. The inscription reads:
Joseph, beloved husband of Maria Heaton Born May 27th 1896, died June 23rd 1972
(Aged 76 years)
Also Maria, beloved wife of Joseph Born May 13th 1893, died August 8th 1985
(Aged 92 years)
