Work commenced on 30th October 2006 to restore the original mosaics on the floor of the grotto entrances.

The schoolchildren started their new mosaic design work on 10th November 2006

An application was made in early 2006 for a Local Heritage Initiative grant to restore the mosaics in the grotto entrances. This was successful, and part of the grant will involve Oakworth Primary School, where the children will help to design a new mosaic panel with local artist, Frances Taylor. This panel will be installed on a wall in the park. The children will also make their own small mosaic boards to keep.
This work will start with a talk in Oakworth Primary School by Gary Bricknell of The Mosaic Restoration Company on 3rd November 2006

Oakworth School mosaic workshops 10th, 17th and 24th November 2006

“I have been working with two classes of 30 each from years 4, 3 and 1, a total of 180 children. Each child has come up with design ideas, and then made a small mosaic (15 x 15cm) which they will be able to take home after it has been in a large display planned at the school.
Years 4 and 3 used ceramic tiles, learning to cut them with tile nippers. The younger ones in year 1 used small pieces of funky foam to make mosaics.
All the children learned about design, colour, shapes and spaces, as well as giving me plenty of ideas of what to put in the design for the mosaic I am going to make for Holden Park.
I have been very impressed by the children's ability to concentrate, and to work together and help each other. Staff at the school are helpful and friendly. I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Heritage Lottery Funded project”.
