Oakworth Gala is held on the first Saturday in July every year in Oakworth and is run by Oakworth Village Society.
This year it is on Saturday 1st July 2017. It is a celebration of all that’s good about Oakworth village and we encourage everyone to take part and enjoy the fun! Local individuals, groups and organisations take part in the procession or run a stall on the Gala field on the day, and we welcome everyone to come along and see them, and find out more about what goes on in your village.
It begins on Windsor Road when the Gala procession starts to assemble at 1:00 pm and then sets off at 2:00 pm to walk through the village to the Gala field which is Oakworth Primary School’s sports field, just off Victoria Road. This procession takes about half an hour to do. Please feel free to line the roads along the route and cheer them as they pass!
The main road is closed whilst we do this, although we operate a rolling roadblock and open it as soon as the procession has passed through so we only cause a minimum disruption to traffic. Normally the road is fully clear shortly after 2.30 pm. The Gala then takes place in the field or playground and lasts for a couple of hours until about 4:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
If you forget about the Gala date approaching, then you’ll get a reminder as we always put the main banner and the Gala bunting up through the village on the Thursday evening before the Gala, and a sign detailing the list of events goes up on the morning of the Gala, next to the mini roundabout at the top of Station Road.
If the weather has been too wet in the preceding week, it can make the field too boggy for it to be safe to use, then we usually go into the Primary School’s playground instead, which means the procession ends there instead of on Victoria Road outside the Cooperative shop.
If you would like to take part in any way, whether it’s to exhibit, run a stall or walk in the procession, please contact Janet Armstrong on 01535 642625.
Oakworth’s Holden Hall is yet again under threat of closure by Bradford Council…
Many local groups use our hall and if it goes we lose the only large meeting hall in our village. Even after Oakworth Methodist Chapel has completed it’s extension, it still won’t be large enough for some groups like Oakworth Scouts, they need Holden Hall and if it closes they will have nowhere else in the village to hold their meetings, so local children will miss out and that should not be allowed to happen.
There’s an open day this coming weekend to find out more and see the new refurbishment work that has been done and the plan to rescue our local hall, it’s on Saturday 11th February from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please come along to register your support and opposition to the closure and even if you can’t attend, please share this message with others and tag people so we can spread the word about this meeting and help to save our local hall!
Our next Village Society meeting will be held at 8:00 p.m. in Oakworth Methodist Church on 10th January.
All Oakworth residents are most welcome to attend.
Please remember also that the Tewitt Lane Service of Remembrance is at 2:00 p.m. at the memorial stone on Sunday 8th January. We would very much appreciate your attendance.
This is our annual event held in memory of the six Royal Canadian Air Force crew members who died when their aircraft crashed into the hillside on 2nd January 1944. See our Tewitt Lane Memorial page for more information
The next event hosted by Oakworth Village Society will be at Tewitt Lane near the Grouse Inn, where we will hold our annual ceremony to remember the six Canadian airmen who lost their lives on 2nd January 1944, when their aeroplane crashed into the hillside in foggy weather, killing all on board.
This event will be held on Sunday 8th January 2017, starting at 2:00 pm. Further information about the memorial is on the dedicated Tewitt Lane Memorial page.
Please come along to help us remember these men who lost their lives in the defence of our country.
11th December 2016
We’re carrying out a complete re-write of the site which will mean going back to a site purely for information on the Village Society and what we do for Oakworth.
All notifications about Oakworth Village Society’s events will be on here.
Please bear with us as we get everything online in the next couple of weeks. We hope to have it all finished by Christmas 2016.
